Short Story

"CYBER GIFT OF THE MAGII"

By Izabella Boros

She sat down in front of her computer, clicking on the power. Her pc starting to click and hum, while the modem flickered. She had typed in her password and patiently waited. A click of her mouse, a dial tone and a ring. She was finally connected onto the internet.

She sat there for hours, chatting with friends. Some she had known for months, others she had just met. After fetching herself a coffee she heard the familiar sound a new nic appeared on the bottom of her screen. He went by the nic 'aloner', she clicked on it and said hello.

They had talked for hours. He was a widower and single father. Employed as a school caretaker. The pay wasn't to great either, but he had a family to care for. She had told him she was single, at the moment she was unemployed. They seemed to enjoy eachother's company.

They met on the internet daily, though they lived a world apart. He was from Ireland, and she was from Vancouver, in Canada. They made dates on the internet, using their imaginations. They had wined and dined together, and danced the night away. The distance between them was only a technicality. They were connected in a more spiritual way.

Days passed by, then months did too. They knew more of eachother than anyone near by ever could. Their feelings were intense, their need to be close was overwhelming. Only their financial state kept them apart. His pay was so little, he had children to care for. She still had no job, and many bills to pay for.

Christmas was upon them. A financial strain on them both. They agreed not to exchange gifts, Their love was all they needed. Neither telling the other of the intense financial pain. He needed money so his rent and bills could be paid. She was so sad, she no longer wanted to be alone.

He emailed her with his decision, to sell his computer. His children deserved a good Christmas, rent and bills needed to be paid. She never received his email, she had sold her computer as well. She bought a two way plane ticket, To surprise him on Christmas Day.

He was so sad on Christmas Eve. He had tried to call his love. There was no answere to his call. He felt lost and truely sad. Waking to the sound of his children, squeeling with delight. Many presents under the small Christmas Tree. Three gifts for three children. He was pleased to see their smiles.

Their smiles had vanished for a moment, there was a knock at the door. He went to check who it could be, afterall it was Christmas morning. When he opened the door he was unsure. She stood there with a smile upon her face. Such a face he had only seen in pictures. She was standing there before him. Merry Christmas Darling!

They embraced, then they kissed. The moment lasted forever. He didnt want to let go of her. How could this be, he asked her. So she explained. She explained how she sold her computer. and bought her plane ticket from the sale. She could no longer be apart from him.

He told her how he sold his computer, and that he emailed her to tell her so. But she had missed his message, she sold hers too. Now they were together, on Christmas Day. He introduced her to his children. They had Christmas dinner together.

They now shared more than typed words, or letters that exchanged between them. They were able to share their love for real. No more computers between them. She left her home to be with him. To share a life and home and family.
